Turning lab and genetic data into products: from measurement to finished blend
From genetic data, blood values and a questionnaire, a formula of its own can be calculated and produced for each person. The chain has five links: data, rule set, formula, production and delivery. At Novogenia, around 50 genes go into the calculation, blood values take precedence for the nutrient concerned, and every dose stays within a fixed window, at or below the EFSA upper limit. Labs and other data owners start with an edge: they have the data, the customer relationship and a natural moment to offer a follow-up product.
700 sextillion profiles – and no shelf to hold them
Around 50 genes, each with three possible genotypes: purely by the math, that adds up to roughly 700 sextillion possible genetic profiles. No shelf in the world has room for that. No product range, no kit of five variants, and no product “for athletes” or “for pregnant women” comes anywhere close to that variety.
That is exactly where the idea behind follow-up products from lab data begins. Personalized in the strict sense means: each person gets an individual amount of each nutrient, calculated from their personal data – one formula per person. If you already hold that data, you already have the most important raw material in your hands.
And that is the difference between a result and a product. A genetic test or a blood analysis is bought once. The result is read and discussed – and what happens next is out of your hands. A personalized supplement, on the other hand, is taken every day, used up and reordered. A result becomes something that shows up in your customers’ daily lives.
Three follow-up products from the same data
At Novogenia, three kinds of follow-up products can be derived from lab and genetic data. They differ in the data they need and in what the data change:
| Follow-up product | Data basis | What the data change | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personalized supplements | genes, blood values, questionnaire, sex, age, body weight – alone or combined | the amount of each individual nutrient | Microtransporters, filled as a daily serving in a stick pack; box of 30 or 90 daily servings |
| Personalized skincare | genetic data | the selection and dosage of ingredients | day serum, night serum, body lotion |
| Genetic analysis with a report | a saliva sample | adds the genetic predisposition to blood values, for example on nutrition | report delivered digitally via a secure portal, printed on request, in up to 18 languages |
These products are not mutually exclusive. A single genetic profile can drive supplements and skincare at the same time. Both rest on the same interpretation, which keeps your range consistent. How skincare from the outside and nutrients from the inside fit together is shown in Combining cosmetics and supplements.
The chain: five legs from measurement to blend
Picture a relay race. The baton is one person’s data. Five runners carry it to the finish – and none of them may drop it or swap it:
- Data: raw genotype or SNP data, DNA test results or a fresh saliva sample; plus blood values where available, a diet and lifestyle questionnaire, and sex, age and body weight.
- Rule set: the data are interpreted. At Novogenia, this is a service, not software that you run on your own. The rule set maps genetic markers to nutrient needs. A gene only goes into the analysis if at least three independent studies back its effect.
- Formula: all the data together produce a requirement for each nutrient. Where a blood value is available, it takes precedence for the nutrient concerned, because it describes the current state. Finally, each value is fitted into a fixed window: at least one third and at most three times the reference intake, with documented exceptions – and always at or below the EFSA upper limit.
- Production: each nutrient sits in its own Microtransporters, tiny beads from 1.6 mm in diameter. They are combined for each person according to their formula. Production starts from a single unit.
- Delivery: each daily serving goes into a stick pack with two personal lines of text, and the stick packs go into a box of 30 or 90 daily servings. Shipping goes directly to your customers; one delivery lasts 90 days.
Handing over the baton safely is the real craft. Instead of one batch of identical boxes, each person gets a product of their own that must always stay matched to the right person. How the formula is calculated in seven steps is already explained in the chapter Personalized supplement manufacturing in our contract manufacturing guide. The data side is covered in depth in From blood values to a formula and From genetic data to a formula; all the limits are explained in Dosing and safety.
Who runs which leg
In a relay, every runner has their own stretch. It works the same way here: you bring in what only you have, and we take on what would otherwise require a lab to build its own factory.
| Leg | Your role | Novogenia’s role |
|---|---|---|
| Data | provide existing genetic data or blood values; collect the questionnaire and consent | check and interpret the data; supply and analyze saliva kits if needed |
| Rule set and formula | decide whether our rule set applies or you specify the composition yourself | calculate the formula – or implement your specification exactly |
| Production | define brand, design and copy | make the Microtransporters, fill the daily servings, pack |
| Delivery | support your customers and answer their questions | ship directly to your customers, under your brand on request |
How roles are split for data protection is a separate question. It is set in the contract and depends on who processes which data for which purpose.
Why no single gene sets a dose
The obvious question is: which gene gives which dose? The honest answer: none on its own. Most nutrients are influenced by several areas of the analysis, and the highest requirement counts. Then come age, body weight, sport, diet and – where available – blood values. That is how each nutrient is dosed individually and to the microgram, with no coarse grid of preset strengths.
This has three consequences that you should also explain to your customers:
- No one-gene formula: a dose cannot be traced back to a single gene.
- Same dose, different reasons: two people can receive the same dose at the upper limit. That is intended and not an error.
- Less can be right: where genes or blood values point to a lower requirement, a lower dose is the professionally grounded result, not an under-dose.
Why you have the edge as a data owner
A manufacturer can fill Microtransporters. What it cannot do is know people, collect their data and earn their trust. That is exactly what you already have:
- The data: genes do not change over a lifetime. A profile you hold can become the basis of a product without a new sample – provided the consent covers that use.
- The relationship: your customers know you. A follow-up product from you is the logical next step after their result, not an offer from a stranger.
- The moment: the moment someone receives their result is the moment they want to know what to do with it.
- The reason to come back: new blood values lead to an adjusted formula. How that grows into a relationship over time is shown in Recurring revenue from follow-up products.
And you do not need to build a production line. Interpretation, formulation, manufacturing, packaging and shipping come from a single source – you coordinate one partner instead of five suppliers.
Where the follow-up product ends and medicine begins
Labs in particular also measure values that matter medically. That is why every follow-up product needs a clear line. Personalized supplements optimize intake within the healthy range. A genuine deficiency, a medical condition or abnormal blood values belong in a physician’s hands. The same goes for questions about medications, pregnancy and breastfeeding.
For your communication, this means: talk about customers and food supplements, not therapy. Sell personalization as what it is – a transparently calculated, individually dosed formula – and not as a promise of cure. The building blocks behind it are scientifically grounded: the reference values, the literature on each genetic variant and the EFSA safety assessments. The recommendations derived from them are logical conclusions. Which marketing claims are allowed is covered in Health claims in our contract manufacturing guide.
Before the first data move
To make sure the baton is handed over cleanly, settle a few points in advance:
- Which data do you have – genetic data, blood values, questionnaire – and in what form? More in Data integration.
- Do your genetic data cover the genes needed? We check that together in the project.
- Does your customers’ consent cover use for a follow-up product, and who has which role in data protection? More in Data protection and roles.
- Under whose name should the product be sold? The routes are compared in Business models for labs and data owners.
- Who explains the product, and where do you refer medical questions?
- How will you start – with a pilot that tests demand and processes? More in Launch and pilot.
