Personalized supplement manufacturing: from genetic, blood and questionnaire data to custom vitamin packs
With personalized supplements, every person gets their own formula. The amount of each nutrient is calculated from their data – genetics, blood values or a diet and lifestyle questionnaire – and always stays within fixed minimum and maximum amounts. For you as a partner, that means one formula per customer, daily servings with personal labeling, a subscription with automatic reorder, and a launch with a pilot of typically 200 to 500 customers.
What personalized supplements mean
With a conventional supplement, everyone gets the same thing: one formula, one dosage, one pack. With personalized supplements, the formula is calculated for one individual person. Rather than selecting a matching variant from a range, the amount of each nutrient is determined from that person’s data.
The market uses the term in broader and narrower senses. There are three typical levels:
| Level | What the customer gets | Manufacturing |
|---|---|---|
| Target-group product | one fixed formula for a group, for example pregnant women or athletes | one batch for everyone |
| Modular system | a selection from several fixed products, often put together via an online quiz | several standard batches |
| Individual formula | an individual amount of each nutrient, calculated from personal data | one formula per person |
This chapter is about the third level – personalized supplements in the strict sense, often marketed as custom vitamin packs. It places the highest demands on data interpretation and production, and on your choice of a personalized supplements manufacturer.
The data sources: genes, blood and questionnaire
A personalized formula is only as good as the data it is based on. There are three possible sources, plus basic data about the person:
| Data source | What it describes | What you should know |
|---|---|---|
| Genetics | the predisposition: how the body processes certain nutrients | does not change over a lifetime; at Novogenia, around 50 genes are analyzed, each with three possible genotypes |
| Blood values | the current nutrient status | the only source for the current state; it therefore takes precedence for the nutrient concerned |
| Questionnaire | diet and lifestyle, for example fruit and vegetable intake, dairy products, a vegan or vegetarian diet, smoking, alcohol, sun exposure and training volume | easy to collect and can be updated at any time |
| Body data | sex, age, body weight | at Novogenia, age is recalculated for every production run |
Genetics act in three ways: a gene variant can block the conversion of a nutrient into its active form, it can make an otherwise beneficial substance unfavorable for that person, or it can raise the amount needed for a nutrient to be effective.
You do not necessarily have to re-test. If usable genetic or blood data already exists, for example at a lab or a testing company, it can be interpreted – see from SNP data to a formula and from lab results to a formula. If it is missing, the analysis can be carried out by the manufacturer: Novogenia is itself a genetic lab and also runs blood analyses.
How a personalized formula is calculated
At Novogenia, seven steps lead from the base recommendation to the final dose of each nutrient:
- Base recommendation: for every active ingredient, every age and every sex there is a recommended intake, derived from studies and the positions of scientific bodies, with the established reference values (D-A-CH, EFSA) as the frame.
- Body weight and other factors: a higher body weight moves the formula upwards, in particular for nutrients involved in energy metabolism; a lower body weight moves it downwards. Competitive sport raises the requirement, and age shifts it in both directions.
- Genetic weighting: where a genetic weakness is present, its effect is weighted using the literature on that specific variant. Maximum genetic risk leads to the maximum dose; a below-average genetic problem leads to a below-average dose.
- Diet and lifestyle: the questionnaire answers are applied to the same nutrient.
- Blood values: where a blood value exists, it takes precedence. A measured deficiency sets the nutrient to its maximum dose; a measured excess removes it from the formula entirely.
- Several areas per nutrient: most nutrients are driven by more than one area of the analysis; the highest resulting requirement counts.
- Window and ceiling: finally, the calculated requirement is fitted into a fixed dosing window.
This way, each nutrient is dosed individually and to the microgram – with no coarse grid of preset strengths. Two consequences are worth knowing, not least for your communication: a dose cannot be traced back to a single gene, because it results from many genes and other data. And two people can receive the same dose at the upper limit – for entirely different reasons. The full method is described in How a personalized nutrient recipe is calculated.
The dose always stays within fixed limits
Personalization does not mean “as much as possible”. Harmonized EU-wide minimum and maximum amounts for food supplements are foreseen in the EU directive but have never been adopted. A serious manufacturer therefore needs its own transparent rules. At Novogenia, these apply:
- Dosing window: a minimum of about one third and a maximum of about three times the reference intake – with documented exceptions: vitamin D3 and vitamin B12 go above that range; magnesium, zinc, calcium and copper stay below it.
- Ingredients without a reference intake, such as omega-3, coenzyme Q10 or lutein, have a fixed minimum and maximum per ingredient.
- Safety ceiling: for every nutrient with an EFSA tolerable upper intake level, the maximum is at or below that level. National statutory maximum amounts are complied with as well.
- Capping rule: a calculated requirement below the minimum is set to the minimum, one above the maximum is set to the maximum. No value outside the window is ever produced.
All limits per nutrient are listed on our page on micronutrient dosing limits.
What personalization can do – and what it cannot
The individual building blocks of the calculation are scientifically substantiated: the reference values, the literature on each gene variant and EFSA’s safety assessments. For the finished, fully personalized combination product, however, there are no large randomized trials proving a benefit over standardized supplementation. That applies to personalized nutrigenetics as a whole.
For you as a provider, this means: sell personalization as what it is – a transparently calculated, individually dosed formula – and not as a health promise. Health-related marketing claims are only allowed if they are authorized in the EU. Also explain to your customers that their formula will change over time: with age, with new questionnaire or lab results, and with new scientific findings.
Production: one formula per person
The biggest hurdle is not the calculation but the manufacturing. Instead of one batch of identical boxes, there is an individual product for every person. That requires a dosage form that can be combined freely and a production process that reliably assigns each formula to the right person.
- A combinable form: at Novogenia, each nutrient sits in its own Microtransporters, which are put together for each person according to their formula – more on this in our chapter on dosage forms.
- Daily stick packs: each daily serving goes into a white, brand-neutral stick pack with a window. Two lines of text of up to 25 characters each make it personal, for example with the customer’s name.
- Box: the stick packs go into a dispenser box with 30 or 90 daily servings, fully in your design – or, for the pilot, into a plain white box with your brand sticker.
- Reproduction on subscription: the formula is recalculated for every new production run – at least with the current age, and with new questionnaire or blood data where available.
- Shipping: directly to your customers, under your brand.
The business model for partners
A genetic test or a blood analysis is bought once. A personalized supplement is consumed and reordered. That is exactly what makes it attractive for labs, testing companies, practices, platforms and brands: a one-time analysis becomes a lasting customer relationship.
| Building block | How it works at Novogenia |
|---|---|
| White label | The formula, packaging, inserts and fulfillment carry your brand; we stay in the background. You keep the data and the customer relationship. |
| Subscription | 90-day subscription with automatic reorder – predictable, recurring revenue. |
| Billing | via Novogenia or via your own system, with Novogenia as your fulfillment partner. |
| Pilot | launch with typically 200 to 500 customers to test demand, processes and communication. |
| Scale-up | joint capacity planning once the pilot is running – up to thousands of customers per month. |
A pilot pays off twice: you see how your target group responds to the offer, and together we learn what monthly customer numbers are realistic. What you should bring as a partner
- Access to your target group: customers who are willing to share data and sign up for a subscription – from your practice, lab, shop or community, for example.
- Data, or a way to get it: existing genetic or blood data, or the decision to run the analysis through the manufacturer.
- Data protection and consent: genetic data and health data enjoy special protection under the GDPR. Clarify early who processes which data and how consent is obtained.
- Brand and design: logo, colors and copy for the box and inserts – for the pilot, a sticker is enough.
- Sales and customer service: who explains the product, who answers questions about the formula, who manages the subscription?
- Billing: the decision whether you bill customers yourself or billing runs through the manufacturer.
- Responsibility: whoever sells under their own name is responsible for the product, its labeling and its marketing claims.
