Supplement contract manufacturing: a practical guide to launching your own supplement

In short

In supplement contract manufacturing, a specialized manufacturer develops and produces your food supplement to your specifications – and you sell it under your own brand. You don’t need your own production facility or lab. This guide takes you step by step from idea to finished product: planning, choosing a supplement contract manufacturer, formulation, the regulatory framework, packaging and sales.

What is supplement contract manufacturing?

Contract manufacturing means that one company produces a product on behalf of another. For food supplements, this means: you bring the idea, the target group and the brand – the supplement contract manufacturer develops the formula with you, sources and tests the raw materials, and produces, packs and ships the product.

The big advantage: you don’t have to invest in machinery, a lab, staff or certifications. You use the infrastructure and experience of a specialized facility and focus on what makes your brand stand out – positioning, sales and customer relationships.

One thing to keep in mind: as the brand owner, you are not off the hook legally. The company under whose name the product is sold is responsible for the information on the product. A good contract manufacturer will, however, take a large share of the work off your hands – from reviewing the formula to the regulatory notification.

Who is contract manufacturing for?

Contract manufacturing is worth considering for anyone who wants to offer their own supplement without producing it themselves. Typical clients include:

Three routes to your own product

Before you approach a manufacturer, decide how much of the product should be genuinely your own:

RouteWhat you getA good fit if …
White labelAn existing product or system from the manufacturer, sold under your brandyou want to launch quickly
Private labelA variant adapted for you, exclusively under your brandyou want to stand out without starting from scratch
Custom formulaA product developed entirely to your specificationsyou have a clear concept of your own

We explain the differences, pros and cons in detail in the chapter White label, private label or custom formula?

The process at a glance

  1. Concept: define your target group, benefit, price range and sales channel.
  2. Briefing: send the manufacturer your preferred nutrients, dosage form, pack size and planned volume.
  3. Formulation: agree on dosages, combinations and release profile together with the manufacturer.
  4. Regulatory review: check that ingredients and amounts are permitted, and clarify labeling and marketing claims.
  5. Packaging & design: choose a format and supply the print files.
  6. Notification: where required (in Germany, for example, to the BVL), notify the product at the latest when it is first placed on the market.
  7. Production & delivery: produce, test, pack and ship.

Every step, with a checklist, is covered in How to get supplements manufactured: 7 steps.

How to recognize a good supplement contract manufacturer

Choosing the manufacturer is the most important decision in the entire project. Above all, look for verifiable certifications, in-house production rather than a mere broker, testing of every raw-material batch, support with formulation and regulatory matters, minimum order quantities that suit your launch – and openness about what the manufacturer cannot do. All twelve criteria, plus questions for your first meeting, are in How to choose a supplement manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my own company to sell a supplement?
Yes. Anyone who places a food supplement on the market under their own name acts as a food business operator and is responsible for the product and its labeling. You don’t need your own production facility, though – the contract manufacturer takes care of that.
How long does it take to get a finished product?
That depends mainly on the formula. At Novogenia, development takes between one week and three months: formulas based on nutrients that are already in stock are much faster than formulas that require a new Microtransporter to be developed. Packaging and production come on top of that.
Who notifies the product to the authorities?
That depends on the country: in Germany, notification to the BVL is mandatory (§ 5 NemV); in Austria, no notification is provided for. The company under whose name the product is sold is always responsible for the label and the food information. In practice, Novogenia handles the notification for its partners in most cases or guides them through it.
Can I start with a small quantity?
Yes. At Novogenia, contract manufacturing is possible from a single unit; with larger quantities the price per box falls. Personalized products typically start with a pilot of 200 to 500 customers. For a fast, low-cost start, a plain white box with your brand sticker is a good alternative to fully printed packaging.
How much does supplement contract manufacturing cost?
The price per box depends mainly on the formula, the packaging and the order quantity – the larger the volume, the lower the cost per box. Our AI price calculator in the chatbot gives you a no-obligation instant estimate; our team then prepares a verified offer.
