White label, private label or custom formula: which route fits your supplement brand?
With white label, you sell an existing product or system from the manufacturer under your own brand – the fastest route. With private label, a product is adapted for you and manufactured exclusively under your name. With a custom formula, the product is developed entirely to your specifications – the greatest freedom, but also the most effort. The industry does not use these terms consistently; what counts is what your contract says.
The three routes in brief
If you want to bring your own supplement to market, the first strategic question is: how much of it should really be “yours”? Your answer determines time, effort, investment and differentiation.
- White label: An existing, proven product or system from the manufacturer is sold under your brand. You mainly design the name, packaging and brand presence.
- Private label: The manufacturer adapts a product for you – for example the dosages, combinations or packaging – and produces it exclusively under your brand.
- Custom formula: The product is developed from scratch entirely to your specifications. You decide on the nutrients, amounts and concept.
A word of caution: the industry does not use the terms white label and private label consistently. Some suppliers mean the same thing by both. So when comparing white label vs private label offers, always ask specifically what is adapted, what is exclusive and who owns the formula.

White label supplements: launch fast with a proven product
White label is the most direct route to your own product. The formula, manufacturing and often the regulatory review have already been proven – so you can focus on what defines your brand: positioning, design and sales.
Advantages: a short route to market, low development risk, predictable quality.
Disadvantages: other brands may offer a comparable product. You stand out mainly through your brand, advice and sales.
White label does not have to mean “a product from a catalog”. It can also be an entire system – for example personalized supplements including the analysis, result report and customer portal, all under your name.
Private label supplements: adapted and exclusive
With private label, you gain more independence without starting from zero. The manufacturer takes a proven base and adapts it to your target group – for example with different dosages, additional nutrients or different packaging.
Advantages: stronger differentiation, a product that fits your target group more precisely, often exclusivity.
Disadvantages: more coordination and usually somewhat more time than white label.
Important: Get written confirmation of what is exclusive to you – the formula, the design or both.
Custom formula: your product from the ground up
With a custom formula, you and the manufacturer develop a product that does not yet exist in this form. You decide on the nutrients, amounts, combinations and dosage form.
Advantages: maximum control and independence, a strong story for your marketing.
Disadvantages: the longest route to market, more development rounds, higher demands on regulatory review and labeling.
This is exactly where a manufacturer that thinks along with you on the science and says openly what is technically and legally possible pays off – more on this in How to choose the right supplement contract manufacturer.
How to make the decision
Three questions will help you choose:
- How fast do you want to launch? If you want to be on the market within a few months, white label is usually the realistic route.
- How do you want to stand out? If your strength is reach, advice or sales, white label is often enough. If the product itself is meant to make the difference, you need private label or a custom formula.
- How much expertise do you bring? A custom formula requires a clear idea of the content – or a manufacturer that supports you closely on the science.
Many brands combine the routes: they start with a proven white label product, gain experience with their target group and then develop formulas of their own.
Whichever route you choose: responsibility lies with your brand
Whoever sells a supplement under their own name is responsible for the product and its labeling – even if the formula comes from the manufacturer. A good contract manufacturer takes a lot of work off your hands: it reviews the formula and label and handles the regulatory notification or guides you through it.
